چکیده

This report investigates the application of two Computer Vision techniques for characterizing critical regions in digital terrain maps: Skeletonization and Topographical Region Detection. The Navigation Path Planning problem involves nding the optimal path through a digital terrain Map and must minimize a cost function while satisfying the constraints of navigation. This process is computationally expensive and has typically been intractable for in ight planning applications. The aim of this work is to extract representations of digital terrain maps which are relevant to the requirements of the path planning problem. Clustering and Di erential Geometry is used to detect regions which are critical to the cost function. Skeletonization is then used to extract features from these regions in terms of navigational constraints and provides a graph like representation. This allows the grid elements of digital terrain maps (pixels) to be replaced by critical regions (Skeletonized topographical regions) and substantially reduces the search required for in ight path planning.

Autonomy and Path Planning in a Planetary Rover

In this paper we present the autonomous and path planning functionalities of a Planetary Rover system. In order to make the Rover system completely independent of human intervention, a high level of navigational autonomy is desirable. Sun sensing and topographical properties are the two factors that are considered here as the Rover navigational aid. Autonomous hazard avoidance can be achieved u...

Shortest path planning on topographical maps

This thesis introduces a new algorithm for quickly answering repetitive least-cost queries between pairs of points on the Earth's surface as represented by digital topographical maps. The algorithm uses a three-step process; preprocessing, geometrically modified Dijkstra search, and postprocessing. The preprocessing step computes and saves highly valuable global information that describes the u...

Topographical disorientation in a patient who never developed navigational skills: the (re)habilitation treatment.

Although many cases of topographical disorientation are described in the literature, very few attempts have been made to rehabilitate this deficit, most likely because it is a multi-faceted syndrome in which different patients are affected by different topographical deficits. Therefore, it is not easy to develop a single rehabilitation programme to improve all types of topographical disorders. ...

Path Planning for Autonomous Qualitative NavigationN

We describe a novel global path planning method for autonomous qualitative navigation in indoor environments. Global path planning operates on top of a qualitative map of the environment that describes variations in sensor behavior between adjacent regions in space. The method takes into consideration the global topology of the environment and applies a set of criteria that can minimize the err...

Integrating fuzzy topological maps and fuzzy geometric maps for behavior-based robots

In behavior-based robots, planning is necessary to elaborate abstract plans that resolve complex navigational tasks. Usually maps of the environment are used to plan the robot motion and to resolve the navigational tasks. Two types of maps have been mainly used: metric and topological maps. Both types present advantages and weakness so that several integration approaches have been proposed in l...
